The quality of any organization starts with its leadership. Organizational leadership drives the vision of an organization and supports employees and staff in delivering on that vision. That is possibly even more vital when looking at an addiction treatment center or rehab facility.
Delivering high quality healthcare services and patient care comes from leadership and management. At Innovo Detox, where medical care of patients dealing with withdrawal management and medical stabilization is paramount, leadership of the medical department and staff is unequivocally of the highest priority. Here at Innovo Detox, we are fortunate and grateful to have our medical department led by Medical Director Alok Saharan, M.D.
Dr. Alok Sarahan is the Medical Director and staff psychiatrist at Innovo Detox and comes to us with an extensive history working in the behavioral healthcare field. Dr. Saharan graduated from the King George’s Medical College located in Lucknow, India in 1991. It was at the same institution of higher learning that he completed his psychiatry residence. Upon completion, Dr. Saharan moved to the United Kingdom and was trained in the Oxford rotation in the UK. He then moved to the United States and completed a psychiatry residency at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is board certified from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Saharan has had experience working in the areas of child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, ECT, and adult psychiatry. He has held positions of lead psychiatrist, medical director, and chairman for departments of psychiatry, while working in settings that include inpatient facilities, outpatient settings, and extended acute care settings for mental health. Dr. Saharan has also previously worked in acute detoxes, inpatient substance abuse programs, dual diagnosis, and co-occurring facilities, residential mental health facilities, as well as in a community mental health center. For twelve years he oversaw the Suboxone medication assisted treatment program. In addition to his work history, Dr. Saharan has also been an assistant professor at two institutions and has won awards as a teacher. He has also spent time as a researcher and has had numerous published research papers.
For more than 25 years in the field of mental health and behavioral healthcare, Dr. Saharan reports he has learned much from his patients that he has been able to help and serve in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. In his experience, substance use disorder as a disease should be understood through the unique perspective of each patient- through their life experiences, their psychological framework, their current stressors, and their co-occurring psychiatry diagnosis. The ability for a doctor or medical professional to understand the disease of addiction through that unique patient lens helps identify predisposing, perpetuating, and precipitating factors which in turn can make the individual understand the reason for continued substance abuse. This aids a patient in creating awareness of their disease and implementing the necessary insight into positive change. Dr. Saharan believes this then tends to help and benefit a patient in their journey towards continuous abstinence, ongoing sobriety, and long-term recovery with the regaining of dignity and peace in their life.
A quote shared by Dr. Saharan often with both his friends and patients is: “Trying your best in life includes asking for help.” Dr. Saharan is grateful to all his current and past patients for making him learn and understand human behavior from their unique individual experiences.
